The inherent significance of a mother.
From the sudden swells of pride and joy that are simply, yet magnificently, unexplainable. To the questions, fear and sorrow that are disillusioning at best.
Motherhood is complex.
Yet deep within all the layers of motherhood, there is a simple truth.
Being a mother is an honor. A gift of great significance.
At face value, this may seem obvious to most people. But can I confess, at times these words feel trite? A nice sentiment that’s offered to encourage weary mothers.
I wonder, how many of us have given much thought to how God views mothers? Shouldn’t God’s view of mothers be the lens through which we see our role?
We can know, at least in part, how God views the role and significance of mothers by looking at the life of Jesus.
Jesus, the Son of God. Our only hope for life, began His earthly life in the same way each one of us did-nurtured in the womb of a woman.
Isn’t that mind blowing?
We know the work Jesus came to do here on earth was of utmost importance. And from our perspective, we’d say Jesus lived a short life in which every moment mattered.
Our limited minds might argue there are many ways Jesus could have been more “productive” or had greater influence had he been given those 9 months to live outside of Mary’s body.
And yet, God saw fit that the Saviour of the world would spend the first 9 months of His life growing and developing in the womb of a woman.
Stop for a moment and really think about the significance of a mother in God’s design for humanity.
To nurture, develop, guide and sacrificially love and serve another person is truly a significant honor.
It is no small thing that God has designed and ordered every human life to begin within the womb of a woman, even the life of the Son of God.
Mothers, may you know and wholeheartedly believe, inherent to God’s design, you are honored.
Two of my favorite gifts!
